DESCRIPTION :

Cities are dynamic systems. Understanding and planning the urban system are key to applying flood adaptation measures in an urban area. In CHAPTER 2 the concept of adaptation pathways, a sequence of adaptation measures to be implemented over time, has been introduced. In this study adaptation pathways are considered as a key component of an urban planning strategy to guide sustainable (climate proofing) regeneration of cities: it allows designers, urban planners and decision makers to consider a raft of adaptation measures to be implemented on the short-, medium- and long-term. It introduces and supports strategic thinking in the designing process by taking into account the life cycle of buildings (adaptation potential), their spatial distribution (mapping) and potential synergies and co-benefits to combine and integrate interventions (clustering). In the current design practice, urban designs are considered as snapshots over time.
