Over the course of history, Thailand is increasingly affected by floods (Manuta et al., 2006; Rattanakanlaya et al., 2016). Today, floods still occur primarily during the monsoon resulting in both fluvial as well as urban floods. In Thailand’s cities, the provision of a well-functioning drainage system is extensively impaired by unplanned urban growth, which also limits efficient conveyance into canals. The latter are often encroached due to land grabbing and blocked due to poor solid waste management (Nakayama et al., 2013).
